According to a good tradition, every year the ornithological community of the country chooses a bird species as a symbol of the year, which can be easily seen in nature and observed. The bird of 2022 was the city swallow. It belongs to the family of swallows, a group of passerines. It’s very interesting to watch, but it should be done so as not to harm the birds. Leonid Pokrytiuk, a well-known Transcarpathian ornithologist and expert at the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies, spoke about this during an ecological and educational event in Berehovo that was dedicated to these amazing birds.

“Swallows can settle in small towns and villages in whole colonies. An important condition for their nesting is the presence of stone or brick buildings, rarely wooden buildings with cornices, and balconies under which they make nests. The swallows migrate to Africa in August – September. They fly in flocks during the day at an altitude of 200 m. In April, they return to us again ”says the ornithologist. Leonid Pokrytyuk acquainted the participants with different types of swallows and taught them how to distinguish them. He explained the difference between swallows and their air neighbors – swifts.

Children willingly joined in the making of swallows out of different materials, which became a creative and sublime part of the environmental and educational event. The applications were transferred to the Berehovo Public Center “Everyone can help”, where they will be used for the Swallow Festival, which will take place here soon.

The event was held in cooperation with the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies – IERS (headed by Alexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (#NABU), project coordinator Ivan Tymofeiev.
