Captivating ideas for the garden: a house and a drinker for insects

Caring for an orchard can be a great hobby during times of change and transformation (which are accompanied by stress). Such activity in the bosom of nature helps to relax, as well as enjoy the results – tasty fruits. However, growing a garden is often threatened by a number of factors: irregular spring frosts, summer drought, pests, and others. A special feature of this summer is the considerable heat and long dry periods. Therefore, the garden and small areas of the vegetable garden must be watered periodically. However, during the drought, water in wells in many settlements of Transcarpathia becomes less and less. To solve this problem, we recommend using special small-scale drip irrigation systems. Such a device can be constructed from a plastic bottle (1.5 l) and a special faucet that allows you to adjust the optimal flow of water in the range from 0.1 to 125 ml per minute. Thanks to this, water will flow evenly from the two-liter bottle under the stem of the plant for a long time – from one to several days. A regular trickle of water, in addition to saving water and constantly moistening the soil, can also serve as a drinker for insects, which are also very thirsty in drought.

Such special houses (“hotels”) for insects are used in order to solve the problem of pests in gardens, which contribute to increasing biodiversity. They serve as a shelter for insects that pollinate plants, as well as for those that regulate the number of pests of cultivated plants.

What insects should you attract to your garden? Farmers around the world highly value ladybugs, which help in the fight against aphids, mites, whiteflies, armored scale insects, and other plant pests. There are many other defenders of the garden. In our area, for example, there are flower flies (Syrphidae), whose larvae parasitize the larvae of many pests; ground beetles (Carabidae), which eat caterpillars, harmful butterflies, and beetle larvae; green lacewings (Chrysopidae) – enemies of aphids (Aphidoidea), mites, armored scale insects, etc.; Trichogramma are active fighters with harmful butterflies and many others.

Some of the insects (various species of bees (potter wasps – Eumeninae), solitary wasps) that will inhabit the “house”, and are useful pollinators. The number of bees in the world has greatly decreased due to the use of a large number of chemical plant protection agents and the destruction of their habitats. That is why such “hotels” for insects are installed in European cities in parks, squares, and zoos. So everyone can fight this problem.

Instructions for creation:

When making houses for insects, you must follow the following recommendations: the average diameter of the holes should be from 2 to 8 mm, and it’s better to use natural materials that were in use for construction (so they will get a second life).

The species composition of insects that will live in such a hotel will determine its filling with various materials:

  • Boards hidden behind a metal grate attract insects that participate in the decomposition of dead wood;
  • Straw or wood will attract green lacewings;
  • Tubelike stems (such as thorn and elder) will provide habitat for flower flies and other Hymenoptera and so on.
  • Installation of drip irrigation systems and houses for insects will contribute to the pollination of herbs, vegetables, and flowers growing in the garden and its surroundings.
