Ecology through the art of puppetry

As part of a series of creative actions launched in cooperation with the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies (IERS) with the support of the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU), in June, young actors of the Transcarpathian Academic Regional Puppet Theater conducted a theatrical interactive eco-quiz “GET TO KNOW NATURE” for young viewers, in the kindergartens of Uzhhorod and Chop. Although each performance took place in front of a different audience, the actors tried to diversify, enrich, and meaningfully fill each event as much as possible, focusing on the age category as well. So, the actors wore different costumes – from jumpsuits to forest elves’ costumes, and used different dolls – e.g. the large “life-sized” doll Ovechka Hanka to the small Bavka – a symbol of Transcarpathian puppeteers. For illustration purposes, the actors used cards, and tables with images of animals, birds, insects, and natural phenomena. Children willingly guessed riddles and answered questions about the rules of behavior in nature and were taught about the need to preserve the environment, and the spiritual value of everything on earth. About 50 children attended each event on average.

During the eco-quiz at the hospital, the artists played an interactive game offering to place trees and animals in their natural habitat before the performance: the children happily recognized the animals and put the figures in the right places. After that, the actual quiz was held finishing with the puppet shows, the content of which was also directly related to the world of animals, and nature, and fostered a caring attitude towards all living things on Earth.

In addition to children’s educational institutions and a puppet theater, a similar event was also held on the basis of the Transcarpathian Regional Library for Children and Youth. In summary, such work carried out:

Thus, as part of the cooperation of the Transcarpathian Regional Academic Puppet Theater “Bavka” with the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies – IERS (headed by Alexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband NABU International ), project coordinator Ivan TymofeievNataliya Kulya (IERS), the actors of the Zakarpattia Academic Puppet Theater held about 20 creative actions for children in Uzhhgorod and Chop and guests of the city, which reached about a thousand young spectators in June 2022.

The artists of puppet theater together with ecologists have many interesting joint creative ideas, regarding the problems of ecology in the modern world, in particular, the inexorable reduction in the number of plant and animal species, the destruction of forest areas, pollution of the atmosphere, water, and soil through the disposal of waste in the ground, the destruction of the ozone layer Earths is an issue of concern for humanity.
