Educational tour of forestry on the topic of Responsibility for Creation

On the occasion of the Intercession of the Theotokos, the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, and the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks, on October 14, 2022, the volunteer center “Everybody can help” and Berehovo forestry organized a charity event for the children of IDPs. The expert of the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies, ornithologist, Leonid Pokrytyuk, organized an excursion to forestry in the village of Yanoshi. Our research team went to an old oak forest in order to admire the colors of autumn.

BIRD WATCHING

Despite the fact that the noisy children tried in every way to scare the birds, we observed a flock of great tits; learned to recognize blackbirds; got acquainted with the Eurasian nuthatch, which nests in hollows, the opening of which is smeared with clay; Wild pheasants kept in an enclosure were observed.

GETTING TO KNOW THE WORLD OF MUSHROOMS

A new rule was established: those mushrooms that people like should be collected, and the rest of the mushrooms should be photographed. The basket contained Russula, Xerocomus, birch bolete, and blusher. We got acquainted with multi-colored shelf fungi, fragile Mycena, brightly colored cortinar, various Tricholoma, and Paxillus.

GREEN PHARMACY and ROBINSON’S CUISINE

Attention was drawn to the rich harvest of rose hips, hawthorn, and blackthorn. We got acquainted with the healing properties of avens. The plant, which is popularly called “clove root”, “Devil’s heads”, – avens. Young leaves (used as a salad) and roots (harvested in spring and autumn) are used in cooking. The roots, having the smell of carnation, are used as spices for vegetable dishes, they are added to apple cakes, pies, and other products instead of cinnamon and carnation. The plant is used in the production of vermouths, liqueurs, and beer. The participants played ecological games after returning from the forest. The children were curious to find the correspondence between the names of familiar animals and birds. Adults inspected the baskets. They played with pictures of trophies of small hunting. A big surprise for us was the festive table. We express our gratitude to the forestry workers for their generosity and hospitality.

The excursion was conducted by Leonid Pokrytyuk as part of the cooperation of the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies- IERS (headed by Alexander Bokotey) and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband NABU International ), project coordinator Ivan TymofeievNataliya Kulya (IERS).
