Today, ornithologist Leonid Pokrytyuk shares with us the experience of daily thorough work on the rehabilitation of birds, which volunteers take out at the Berehovo volunteer center “Everybody Can Help”. “Each day begins with weighing sick birds. Weight gain means better health and the right course of treatment…” – says Leonid.

He also explains the process of feeding birds: “Storks are not much trouble. They are undemanding carnivores. They like chicken hearts and fish. Visitors of the center treat them with chicken necks. Eurasian hobby and little owl also prefers chicken hearts. We soak them in carrot juice for nutrition and add powder from the chicken shells. We sometimes treat the little owl with mice. The rook is omnivorous, but only takes treats from hands – pieces of cheese or meat. We chose a place for aviaries for the Eurasian hobby (Falco subbuteo) and bought some materials.

Leonid Pokrytyuk also talked a lot and showed a video about Baidi stork. The white stork (Ciconia ciconia), which is being rehabilitated at the “Everyone can help” center, after the first trip to the territory of the county estate, does not make any more attempts to leave its temporary shelter. The stork was marked “green” for reliability.

In addition to all the hard work, the volunteer – researcher conducts constant observations of nature. “In broad daylight, a large bat was observed hunting on the territory,” he says. The appearance of a bat during the day may indicate a cooling effect.” The study of folk signs in the meteorological aspect is also a very interesting topic, which we will talk about in our future meetings with Leonid Pokrytyuk.

Leonid Pokrytyuk is an expert at the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies (headed by Alexander Bokotey), who works in cooperation with NABU – the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU Bundesverband NABU International ). All activities of volunteers for the rehabilitation of birds at the volunteer center are important practical steps in the implementation of the concept of Responsibility for Creation – Nature.
